The sling’s made from premium J&FJ Baker equestrian Butt leather (the strongest part of the hide).
It’s rather special as it’s Oak Bark Tanned by J&FJ Baker. They are the only tannery left tanning this traditional way in Britain, so it’s always quite a privilege to make anything with their leather.
It’s built to be the sort of thing which can be handed down the family.
Where it’s single ply, the leather is around 4.5mm thick, on the shoulder strap it’s nearer 6mm. The pad is lined an stitched with a Pearson number 6 harness stitcher, using Coates Terko Satin thread (recommended to me by a heavy horse harness maker).
The carving was drawn directly onto the leather and hand tooled over a number of hours. It’s a complete one off - there were no stencils on this one and there’ll be no repetition of it in the future.
The shoulder pad is 3 1/4” thick at its widest point, the adjusting strap is 1 inch wide.
The sling is adjustable through approximately 33 and 43.5 inches. There are two means of adjusting: a buckle in the centre of the strap allows 6 inches adjustment in inch increments, and on the base of the sling there are also three holes and a press stud an inch and a half apart from each other.
Will fit standard inch wide rifle swivels (not included).
